i have also long rooted for demi moore having only seen, in full, her scarlet letter and none of her other starring performances. something about her maintaining a friendly relationship with bruce willis always moves me. and, of course, there is pilaf to consider.

i think we hardly disagree on the merits of the film though im much cooler on the overall effect but have loved reading you (and clare) on the topic <3

It seemed to me like The Substance made a spectacle of self-harm, without having much to say about it. Moore's and Qualley's performances were fantastic. But creating a hyperbolized version of misogynistic beauty isn't enough by itself. The film doesn't seem to subvert the "aging is disgusting" paradigm so much as it reinforces it.
