I’ve seen The Bling Ring a handful of times but I’ve never noticed before that the story is really told from Marc’s perspective. I had always considered Rebecca (Katie Chang) “the lead,” and she is, but we get the most insight into Marc. His interviews with “Kate from Vanity Fair” pepper the film, and he’s the only interview we see where the character is really trying to convey the truth.

Marc (Israel Broussard) is trying to be authentic and he’s trying to be known—which is what the whole movie is about. Marc just wants friends. He thinks he wants “the lifestyle,” as he calls it at one point, and he does, but that’s ultimately a distraction. He’s looking for a best friend and a place in the world. If he could just have been friends with Rebecca, Nicki (Emma Watson), Chloe (Claire Julien), and Sam (Taissa Farmiga), he would have been perfectly happy.
