Rumble Fish is one of Francis Ford Coppola’s very best films, confirmed by its inclusion on Sofia Coppola’s ballot for the 2022 decennial Sight & Sound greatest films of all time poll. She could not have chosen it for any other reason, obviously.
Coppola Sr. has spoken publicly about wanting to direct S.E. Hinton’s novel Rumble Fish but that her novel The Outsiders was the more famous, so he purchased the rights to both. He cranked through The Outsiders so that he could make Rumble Fish directly after using the same sets with the same crew and cast, being, as they are, set in the same milieu. As expected, The Outsiders made a ton of money and is mid, while Rumble Fish made no money and is fantastic.
