Alden Ehrenreich in black and white! (Not 'Oppenheimer'...)
I really enjoyed Tetro! I wasn’t sure how I would feel about Late Coppola. I remember when those movies came out; I was, like, in my teens/early 20s, and just went with the common wisdom that he wasn’t making anything worth seeing anymore. And this one—this is on digital! What an humiliation for the great Francis Ford Coppola…
But I found Tetro to be very moving and also formally adventurous, if imperfect. It’s one of those movies where you’re like, I really respect the swing of it, even if not everything works.
The film is about Bennie Tetrocini (Alden Ehrenreich, in his big screen debut!) who goes to visit his estranged brother Angie (Vincent Gallo) when he is docked in Buenos Aires (he’s a waiter on a cruise ship—“Little Bennie, able-bodied seaman!” proclaims his brother). Bennie soon learns that Angie goes by the name Tetro now, which is also the name of the film.
